Frequently Asked Questions
Foundations & Approach
What is BrightEugene's core philosophy?
BrightEugene focuses on looking beyond the behavior to understand what is actually shaping it. When a child is showing signs of difficulty, the instinct is often to focus on fixing the behavior. At BrightEugene, the focus is broader — understanding the child's developmental stage, the dynamics within the family, how parents and children communicate, and the context they are living in. Every concern is examined in full context to give families the clearest possible picture of what their child is going through and what to do next.
What age groups do you serve?
I primarily support families with children in early childhood through the elementary years, typically ages 2 to 12.
Is this a substitute for therapy or medical diagnosis?
No. BrightEugene provides educational and developmental consultation, not therapy, diagnosis, or clinical assessment. Many families use this work alongside other professional support, or on its own when they are looking for deeper understanding of what they are observing at home.
What kinds of questions do families usually bring to you?
Families often contact me when behavior feels hard to explain: a child who shuts down, pushes back constantly, struggles socially, or seems behind in ways that are hard to pinpoint. If something feels off and you are not sure why, that is enough reason to be in touch.
Choosing a Service
Which service is right for my situation?
- Consultation: Best for a real-time conversation about your situation, concerns, or questions. Includes a written developmental summary.
- In-Home Observation + Consultation: Best when you want direct observation of everyday interactions at home. Includes a written report and follow-up consultation.
- Video Analysis + Consultation: Best when you want structured written analysis of submitted video, followed by a live discussion of findings.
- Seminar: Group learning sessions for parent or educator groups seeking shared understanding of child behavior and development.
Can I add Video Analysis or In-Home Observation after a consultation?
Yes. Both services are available as add-ons for families who have already purchased or are currently purchasing a Consultation.
- Video Analysis Add-On: Submit up to 5 video clips for written developmental analysis. Available at a reduced fee compared to the standalone service.
- In-Home Observation Add-On: A home visit to observe your child in their natural environment, followed by a written report. Available at a reduced fee compared to the standalone service.
Consultations
What concerns are best suited for a consultation?
Common topics include attention concerns, behavior intensity, emotional regulation, daily resistance, sibling dynamics, and parenting decision-making. If something about your child's behavior or development feels unclear or hard to manage, a consultation is a good starting point.
Do I need to prepare anything before the session?
Completing the Before Your Consultation form in advance is the most important preparation. It allows the session to focus on interpretation rather than background information gathering.
Is a written summary always included?
Yes. Every consultation includes a structured written developmental summary delivered within three to five business days following the session.
Can we discuss more than one child?
Related concerns such as sibling dynamics may be addressed together. Distinct developmental concerns for different children may require separate sessions.
What if my child has an existing diagnosis such as ADHD?
BrightEugene does not provide medical evaluations or diagnoses. Whether or not a diagnosis exists, the focus remains on understanding what is driving the behavior in your child's specific context and identifying practical adjustments for your family.
Is this service clinical or therapeutic?
No. This service is strictly educational and consultative. It is not a clinical evaluation, therapeutic intervention, or formal diagnosis.
In-Home Observation
What is the benefit of an In-Home Observation?
Observation in home or other everyday settings is where children are most themselves. It allows patterns to be seen as they actually unfold in moments that are difficult to interpret through description or video alone, such as intense outbursts, ongoing power struggles, shutdown or refusal, or interactions that escalate quickly without a clear reason. Dr. Jung observes how the child responds to the people, spaces, and expectations that shape their daily life. This format is particularly valuable when concerns feel hard to describe, when previous approaches have not provided clarity, or when you want a more complete understanding of what is driving your child's behavior.
In-person observation is available within the Greater Seattle area. For inquiries outside this area, you can send a message to discuss availability.
Will Dr. Jung interact with my child during the visit?
Minimal interaction is preferred so that natural behavior can be observed. The focus is on the existing dynamics between the child, the parents, and the environment rather than on introducing a new interaction.
Is this suitable for school-aged children?
Yes. Observations for older children often focus on homework routines, transitions, sibling interactions, or other everyday situations where concerns tend to surface most clearly.
Do you observe in preschools or schools?
Observation in school or other public settings can be arranged with appropriate permissions from the school and relevant staff. When helpful, this can provide additional context alongside observations in home or other everyday settings. If a school-based observation is being considered, please contact BrightEugene to discuss.
What if I am outside the Greater Seattle area?
Dr. Jung may be available beyond the Greater Seattle area by arrangement. Contact BrightEugene to discuss your location and availability.
Is this a clinical evaluation or diagnosis?
No. This service is strictly educational and consultative. It is not a clinical evaluation, therapeutic intervention, or formal diagnosis.
Video Analysis
What kinds of situations are most useful to record?
The most informative recordings tend to capture natural, unscripted moments — a mealtime conversation, a transition from one activity to another, a moment of resistance or frustration, sibling interaction, or play. There is no need to stage anything or wait for a specific behavior to occur. Everyday life provides the clearest picture.
What happens to my videos after submission?
Videos are stored in a private, secure folder accessible only to Dr. Jung and are never shared with third parties. They may be retained to allow for future developmental comparison unless a deletion request is received. You may request deletion at any time by contacting BrightEugene.
Can video recorded in school settings be submitted?
To protect the privacy of others, only videos recorded in private home settings are accepted. School-based footage cannot be accepted.
Can siblings be included in the video?
Yes. Sibling interaction often provides valuable context. You are welcome to submit video where siblings are present.
What if my recordings slightly exceed the guidelines?
A slight overage is generally acceptable. That said, please aim to stay within 5 clips and 20 minutes total. A variety of shorter clips across different contexts is more useful than one extended recording of a single situation.
Do I need a Zoom account to join the consultation?
No. You do not need a Zoom account. Simply click the link included in your confirmation email at your scheduled time and you will be connected directly.
Seminars
Who are seminars intended for?
Parents, educators, schools, and organizations seeking a structured, research-informed discussion of children’s behavior and development, tailored to shared questions within a group setting.
Are seminars available virtually or in person?
Seminars are available virtually and in person. In-person seminars are available in the Greater Seattle area and beyond by arrangement. For inquiries about in-person delivery outside the Greater Seattle area, feel free to send a message.
Can the topic be customized?
Yes. Each seminar is tailored to your group's specific focus and questions. The inquiry form asks you to describe your group's interests and priorities so the content can be shaped accordingly.
How is this different from a Consultation?
Consultations focus on one family's specific situation. Seminars address broader developmental patterns and shared concerns across a group. Individual concerns are better addressed through Video Analysis or Consultation.
Are seminars clinical or therapeutic?
No. Seminars are educational and research-informed. They do not provide diagnosis, therapy, or clinical intervention.
How do I request a seminar?
Complete the Seminar Inquiry Form with details about your group, preferred topic, and format. Dr. Jung will follow up within two business days to discuss availability and next steps.
